ABOUT ME
Years ago, in the 1980s, I forayed into the world of colour answering a craving that has seeped in from my childhood days. I chose to remain untrained in painting, to enjoy unrestricted freedom often bordering on the impulsiveness of the wild. I began my journey with the brush, ignorantly using water colour brushes for oilmixing my paints entirely with turpentine not knowing the existence of linseed oil and colouring blank walls with charcoal and crayon. I then began my effort to use water as a brush, sweeping the white expanse of the canvas with the varied colours of Nature. Created in the boundless sphere of Abstraction, my paintings carried me through intractable stretches of imagination and gave me the joy of experimentation that I enjoy to this day. The stamp of approval came with my first solo exhibition, inaugurated by Raja Ramanna at the West Minster Gallery at Windsor Manor, Bangalore. Then came the invitations to exhibit my paintings in Kampala and Nairobi and I felt that my art was answering a call from a corresponding world in Nature. A few days before I left for Campala, I received the Honourable Mention Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. A few months later, I received the All India A.I.F.A.C.S award. My exhibitions in Africa, New York, Hamburg and Indian cities have all helped me to experience an expansive art sensibility and the truth behind the universality of Art. This has been an art language I owe totally to the unfailing support from my husband who has been an ardent supporter of Art. Likewise, I have enjoyed the spirited and enthusiastic support of our children and grandchildren.
Like the African wild, my paintings are untouched by hand or brush or any instrument whatsoever. Painting purely from instinct, I have come to believe in the spirtuality behind painting. I believe, also that the moment I put aside spontaneity to obey the rules of painting, I cease to be an artist. My abstractions may lead me to forms in a spontaneous way but I know that in my abstractions I have found the essence and ultimate joy of creation.
